Skylight Replacement NZ: Why Velux Isn’t Always the Most Cost Effective Option

Why every skylight replacement should not automatically be a Velux.

As an independent installer who specifies all brands, one of the biggest issues we see in the industry is homeowners being sold a “standard replacement” without considering the existing skylight brand, skylight and roof type, framing layout and cost to homeowner.

If your current skylight is a different brand, or homemade, using fixed Velux sizing can sometimes create major extra costs:

• Full reframing

• Rebuilding lightwells

• Interior plastering and painting

• Flashing and roof modifications

• Additional weatherproofing work

In many situations, the most recognised brand is not necessarily the most cost effective solution.

Every roof and skylight setup is different. The best outcome comes from working with installers experienced across multiple product types and roofing systems not just one supplier.

Sun tunnel brands commonly installed in NZ include:

• SolaTube

• MaxLight

• MaxBright

• Suntrenz

• Velux

Skylight brands include:

• Roto

• Velux

• Natural Light Solutions

• Adlux

• Clearlite

• Fakro

• Keylite

Dome skylight options include:

Fixed, vented, opening, double skinned

• Cambrian

• Adlux

• Cameo

• Natural Light Solutions

Good skylight design is about selecting the right product for the building, roof structure, waterproofing requirements, ventilation needs, and budget.

The cheapest unit price on paper can sometimes become the most expensive install on site.

From retrofits through to complex replacements, experience across multiple systems matters.
